After the January 2019 announcement and subsequent 2020 adoption of Florida’s new B.E.S.T. Standards, the PCSD Department of Teaching and Learning began planning for the important transition to new standards. This transition, referred to by FLDOE as an “aggressive timeline”, required immediate action to ensure that our incredible educators would be fully supported and prepared to implement not only new standards but also new curriculum, resources, and tools aligned to the new standards.
Educators teaching K-2 and 9-12 ELA were introduced to the B.E.S.T. Standards for ELA through a series of virtual sessions in January of 2020. The learning continued into the summer months as the Department of Teaching and Learning instructional supporters partnered with Benchmark Advance and Savvas My Perspectives to facilitate a series of multi-day sessions referred to as “B.E.S.T. Standards Institutes for ELA” throughout June and August to support deeper learning and understanding of the new standards and collaborative planning using the new curriculum resources.
As our educators were learning and collaborating this summer, community business partners stepped in to provide donations to help celebrate the efforts of the 145 educators who attended. From gift cards to beach bags to school supplies, some of PCSD’s finest were showered with appreciation from some of our incredible neighbors!
