PCSD

Putnam County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Rick Surrency, who has dedicated 48 years to the district and has served as superintendent since 2016, recently shared exciting updates on the district’s vision of Shaping the Future.

Under Dr. Surrency’s leadership, Putnam County Schools have seen remarkable progress. Graduation rates have improved from 54.9 percent to an impressive 92.5 percent, reflecting the hard work of students, teachers, and families across the district. Career and Technical Education opportunities have also greatly expanded, giving students hands-on pathways in areas such as building construction, advanced manufacturing, firefighting, welding, and automotive. Most recently, PCSD launched an Aviation Program that allows students to log flight hours, earn commercial licenses, gain drone pilot certifications, and pursue other aerospace opportunities. Through a new partnership with Space Florida, students also have access to programs in satellite building and rocketry—opening doors to careers in cutting-edge industries.

Supporting and retaining teachers remains a top priority. Thanks to a strong mentoring program, retention rates for teachers in their first three years have risen from 65 percent to 90 percent. The district has also opened a new Employee Health Center, available at no cost to PCSD employees with district insurance, further demonstrating a commitment to caring for the people who serve our students every day.

To celebrate and share the great things happening in Putnam County Schools, the district launched a podcast series four years ago. Nearly 95 episodes have already been produced, highlighting stories from classrooms, schools, and the wider community. The next step is the launch of a virtual podcast platform, which will welcome guests from across the nation—including superintendents and community leaders—broadening our reach and spotlighting innovation in education both locally and beyond.

And the future is being built in more ways than one. Dr. Surrency also shared exciting updates on new school construction projects that will transform the landscape of learning in Putnam County. These modern facilities will provide safe, inspiring environments where students can thrive for generations to come.

Dr. Surrency’s message made one thing clear: PCSD Public Schools are the best choice for Putnam. Together, we are shaping the future with stronger schools, brighter opportunities, and a community united in support of every student.
