In a celebration of literacy and learning, the Putnam County School District recently concluded a heartwarming book distribution event, ensuring that every K-6th grade student took home a book of their own. Thanks to the generosity of the United Way of St. Johns & the Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Fund, this initiative provided students with high-quality books designed to foster a love of reading and empower young minds.
Books were thoughtfully chosen to align with English Language Arts (ELA) topics, giving students an opportunity to connect their reading experiences with classroom learning. The selected titles included:
K-1st: From Seed to Plant or Caterpillar to Butterfly
2nd-3rd: We the Kids or The Congress of the United States
4th-5th: The Wild Robot or Everything Robotics
6th: Where is the Grand Canyon? or Where is Antarctica?
Each school worked with their literacy coaches to organize engaging book selection and distribution events. Students had the chance to choose between two grade-appropriate titles, adding an exciting element of personalization to the experience.
The Teaching and Learning team spearheaded the delivery process, beginning on Friday, December 6th, and continuing into the following weeks. Boxes of books arrived at campuses across the district, where staff eagerly prepared for the distribution events. These events were filled with joy and excitement as students made their selections. Smiling faces and the sound of pages turning filled the rooms, showcasing the power of reading to inspire curiosity and imagination.
The initiative not only brought books to students’ hands but also emphasized the importance of reading in their academic and personal growth. The events served as a reminder of the critical role literacy plays in shaping future success.
