Last night, Palatka Jr.-Sr. High School celebrated the dedication of its athletic center in honor of alumnus and community icon John L. Williams. The event, held between the girls’ and boys’ varsity basketball games, brought together students, staff, alumni, and community members to honor his remarkable legacy.
Principal Cathy Oyster opened the ceremony with heartfelt remarks, highlighting the significance of Williams’ legacy. Stephanie Wellon delivered a moving rendition of the National Anthem, followed by a heartfelt invocation from Reverend Karl Flagg, who dedicated his prayer to the memory of Williams’ late parents.
School Board Chair Phil Leary delivered uplifting remarks, commending Williams’ dedication and role as a community role model. Superintendent Rick Surrency spoke about Williams’ lasting legacy, emphasizing the inspiration he provides for future generations of students and athletes.
Jim McCool presented a commemorative plaque, reading its inscription:
"In honor of John L. Williams, a cherished Palatka Panther whose dedication on and off the field has inspired generations. A standout athlete and devoted supporter of Palatka Jr.-Sr. High School, his legacy reflects unwavering commitment to sports, education, and community."
Williams concluded the ceremony with a heartfelt address, thanking his Lord and Savior, his wife, mentors, PCSD, and the community. He shared touching words about Jim McCool and ended with an enthusiastic, “Go Panthers!”
