The Putnam County School District (PCSD) proudly hosted its annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration, themed “Pioneers of Change - Shaping the Future.” Held on November 15, 2024, at the C.L. Overturf, Jr. District Center, this inspiring event once again brought together students, educators, and community members to celebrate and honor the vibrant contributions of Hispanic culture and heritage. To maximize community engagement, a livestream link was sent to every classroom across Putnam County, allowing students countywide to participate in the festivities.
The celebration began with a warm welcome from Shree Clayton, PCSD’s ELL Support Leader, followed by opening remarks from Dr. Rick Surrency, Superintendent, and Holly Pickens from the Putnam County School Board, District 1. Both speakers emphasized PCSD’s dedication to honoring diversity and fostering an inclusive environment for all students.
Middleton-Burney Elementary School students Aiden Sanchez, Samuel Hoilman, King Williams, and Allyson Medina then presented “Highlights of Hispanic Culture,” offering the audience insightful glimpses into the rich history, traditions, and customs that define the Hispanic community. Through their heartfelt presentation, these students helped attendees gain a deeper appreciation for Hispanic heritage.
The stage came alive with a lively Mexican Dance performance by Crescent City Jr.-Sr. High School students Karla Perez, Litzy Aboytes, Brenda Perez, and Lizbeth Sanchez. Their rhythmic and captivating dance showcased the joy and energy characteristic of traditional Hispanic dance forms, delighting all in attendance.
The Quinceañera Fashion Show, presented by students from Palatka Jr.-Sr. High School, celebrated a treasured Hispanic cultural tradition symbolizing the passage from girlhood to womanhood. Perla Lopez-Martinez, Viviana Bacilio-Solano, Jenny Duran-Santiago, Jenny Hernandez, Greidy Contreras, Marcela Garcia, Valeria Cruz Olvera, Melanie Rojas, Michael Brown, and John Carr donned elegant gowns and suits that paid homage to this beloved rite of passage.
Highlighting influential Hispanic figures, students from James A. Long Elementary School portrayed “Pioneers of Change” who have made a lasting impact on society. Camilla Mejias Boria represented Eva Perón, Olivia Velazquez took on the role of Sonia Sotomayor, and Adryana Lugo portrayed Ellen Ochoa. Through their performances, these young students inspired the audience with stories of resilience, achievement, and the importance of shaping the future.
Middleton-Burney Elementary students Mila Sanchez, Jacklyn Lara, Timya Johnson, Ally Carbajal, Abby Carbajal, Noah Villegas, J’Yonna Dewdney, Sofia Herrera, Daphne Shaw, Ava Fitzgerald, Gael Espinoza-Villegas, Nathan Villegas, Liliana Medina, and Aldo Villegas proudly showcased traditional Hispanic attire in the Hispanic Heritage Traditional Fashion show. Their colorful and diverse outfits displayed the beauty and cultural pride that enriches the Hispanic community.
The event concluded with remarks from the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Planning Committee, who expressed gratitude to all participants and attendees.
After the presentations, students and guests were invited to enjoy a lunch provided by the PCSD Food Service Department.
This year’s celebration was a testament to the enduring impact of Hispanic culture in our community. By celebrating influential figures and showcasing traditional performances, PCSD remains committed to shaping an inclusive and supportive environment for all.
