On Thursday, September 20, 2024, we celebrated national #TeachAg Day. This initiative, launched by the National Association of Agriculture Teachers (NAAE), aims to enhance the retention and recruitment of agriculture teachers nationwide. This year, we were proud to have Kortni Rogers, our agriculture teacher at QI Roberts Jr. Sr. High School, selected as one of just 400 teachers in the country to complete the #TeachAg curriculum. Ms. Rogers invited all her agriculture students to participate in a special event held in the gym.

The day kicked off with students creating “teacher” name tags and enjoying snacks while watching the introductory video, "It Starts in the Classroom." This inspiring video follows two university students on their journey to becoming teachers. You can watch it here.

Following the video, students chose an agriculture pathway they were interested in teaching, such as Animal Systems, Environmental Systems, or Biotechnology Systems. In groups, they rotated through four interactive stations that encouraged them to think like agriculture teachers:

  1. Ag Ed Advocate: Students brainstormed community service projects to promote their ag program.

  2. Limitless Learning Station: They designed a project for their “students” to complete within their chosen pathway.

  3. Boundless Classrooms: Students created a meaningful field trip that would connect their classmates to industries related to their pathways.

  4. Humble Leaders: They developed projects that extended beyond the agriculture classroom, collaborating with other school organizations.

The discussions at each station were invaluable. For instance, one group proposed a trip to France to study agriculture, prompting questions about funding and parental concerns about the distance from home. Another group faced a challenge when their project plan included only one step, leading them to consider what their students would do after completing it.

After all groups finished their stations, they reconvened for a reflection activity led by Ms. Rogers. The students left the gym with smiles, and who knows? We may have a future agriculture teacher in the making!

Additionally, other teachers in the district received #TeachAg kits from the Career and Technical Education Department to join in the fun.
