In response to the ongoing bus driver shortage in Putnam County, Randy Hedstrom, who now works with the Putnam County School District (PCSD) Transportation, called upon PCSD employees to assist. Demonstrating a remarkable commitment to our community, five dedicated staff members have volunteered to become "Substitute Bus Drivers." These individuals will continue to fulfill their regular duties while being credentialed to support the transportation team when needed.
The process of becoming a Substitute Bus Driver is rigorous and requires dedication. To obtain a Class B learner's permit, volunteers must possess a valid Florida driver's license, pass knowledge exams and a vision test, provide proof of identity and residency, pass a Department of Education Bus Operator Physical examination, and submit to a driving record review. This comprehensive training underscores the significant responsibilities our bus drivers shoulder daily.
While these efforts are commendable and essential, they do not fully resolve the shortage. It’s important to note that the initiative of these employees does not diminish the need for professional bus drivers and aides, who are vital to our district. The role of bus drivers is indispensable, as they are often the first and last representatives of the school district that students encounter each day. These professionals build relationships with students and are entrusted with the critical responsibility of transporting our most valuable assets safely.
PCSD continues to actively hire for bus driver and bus aide positions. This work is worthy of respect and admiration, and we encourage those who are interested to consider joining our team. Our Transportation department, along with those stepping up to support it, embodies the spirit of community and mutual support that defines PCSD.
At PCSD, we are not just a school district; we are a family. We look out for each other, celebrate our shared commitment to education, and take pride in shaping the future. We are proud to be PCSD!
